“This is a big advance because, up till now, it takes two to six minutes and a gas mask to accurately estimate how much energy a person is burning,” said Scott Delp, the James H. The list of components and code for making the system are both available. This new wearable system only requires two small sensors on the leg, a battery and a portable microcontroller (a small computer), and costs about $100 to make. Such setups are used to assess health and athletic performance, but they involve bulky, uncomfortable equipment and can be expensive. There are laboratory-grade systems that can accurately estimate how much energy a person burns during physical activity by measuring the rate of exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen in breath. (Consider how a cup of coffee can increase heart rate.) The researchers hypothesized that leg motion would be more telling – and their experiments confirmed that idea. population and found that it does very well, with about one third the error of smartwatches,” said Patrick Slade, a graduate student in mechanical engineering at Stanford who is lead author of a paper about this work, published July 13 in Nature Communications.Ī crucial piece of this research was understanding a basic shortcoming of other wearable calorie counters: that they rely on wrist motion or heart rate, even though neither is especially indicative of energy expenditure. “We built a compact system that we evaluated with a diverse group of participants to represent the U.S. Whereas smartwatches and smartphones tend to be off by about 40 to 80 percent when it comes to counting calories burned during an activity, this system averages 13 percent error. Engineers from Stanford University have developed a new calorie burn measurement system that is small, inexpensive and accurate.

Entrapment can occur in four to five seconds, and full engulfment can result in only 22 seconds. According to OSHA, a person in a bin has only two seconds to react once grain starts flowing beneath him. One foot of grain in a bin can create about 300 pounds of pressure, so even with just two feet of grain surrounding a body, it takes an enormous amount of pull strength to lift someone out.Įntrapment and full engulfment can occur very quickly when an augur is running or grain is flowing for any other reason. Once entrapped, it is nearly impossible for a person to pull him- or herself out to safety, and very difficult for someone else to lift the person from the grain, experts say. The risk becomes extreme when machinery such as an auger is running and the grain is flowing, making it more likely that someone in the bin will be pulled down into the moving grain and suffocate. In a typical year, the grain is air-dried during storage and, when needed, an auger stirs the dry grains so they flow steadily from the bottom of the bins onto a conveyor.įarmers sometimes must enter the bins to break up clumps or clogs in order to get the grain to flow out freely - a practice that is inherently dangerous owing to the risk of entrapment or suffocation within the grain, which can move or settle almost like quicksand.Įven when stationary, grain can settle beneath someone who is inside the bin, entrapping or engulfing the person. The gray metal structures, often cylindrical in shape and holding from 1,000 bushels to up to 2 million bushels, are ubiquitous on farms in South Dakota and across the country. Grain Bins - and Risk of Entrapment - Common on Farmsįarmers typically store grains such as corn and soybeans in elevated bins from the time of harvest in the fall or early winter to use as feed or to sell in the spring or summer. The letter warned that “similar weather conditions in 2009 resulted in the industry’s highest number of injuries and fatalities.” In bold lettering, the warning began with the statement, “Grain bin deaths spike as farmers rush late harvest!” The letter provided safety recommendations and links to OSHA guidelines, and noted that due to recent heavy rains, fatalities began rising starting in August 2019. In late February, the Chicago regional office of OSHA sent a letter to commercial grain-storage operators with an urgent warning to increase safety measures to reduce accidents. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has taken note of the dangerous conditions in handling grain harvested in 2019. As a result, we have seen an uptick in situations where people have become engulfed and trapped or have died in grain bins.” It came in wet, it didn’t dry down very well and there’s a lot of broken material in the bins. “This particular crop is not storing well. “Grain quality is directly linked to safety,” Adkisson said. Those conditions make the grain flow less freely from the bins and make it more likely farmers will have to enter the bins to keep the grain moving, said Jeff Adkisson, a farmer who is vice president of the Grain and Feed Association of Illinois and also serves on the board of the national Grain Handling Safety Council. The lack of consistency and low quality of the grain make it more likely to clump, stick to the sides of a bin or form a crust over the top. Those factors from the 2019 harvest, in addition to the use of old, leaky bins on some farms, have combined to reduce the quality of grain being stored and result in a product known as “out-of-condition” grain. Heavy rainfall and brisk harvest conditions throughout 2019 across the 10-state “corn belt” that includes South Dakota led many farmers to harvest grain crops later than usual and produce grain that was immature or damper than normal. South Dakota in 2020 has already seen the death of a 27-year-old father of three in Brookings County in February and the entrapment of a farmer who was rescued from a grain bin in Hughes County in March. The number of reported grain entrapments across the country rose by 27% from 2018 to 2019, and deaths rose by 53% that year. Wet and cold weather in 2019 have created a dangerous situation this year for South Dakota farmers who store grain in bins, heightening a risk of entrapment or death that has existed on farms for generations. During the 1880s, apparently on American university campuses, close harmony groups remade it into the better-known-and even more preposterous-'My Bonny Lies over the Ocean'. Lloyd says about "My Barney": "A stage song favoured by Irish comedians from the 1860s on. In the liner notes for 1975 album "For Pence and Spicy Ale" where the English traditional singing group The Watersons recorded a version, the musicologist A. Īnother song from the English tradition titled "My Barney Lies over the Ocean" has a slightly different melody, and it is said to be an antecedent of "My Bonnie". Theodore Raph in his 1964 book American Song Treasury: 100 Favorites, writes that people were requesting the song at sheet music stores in the 1870s, and Pratt was convinced to publish a version of it under the pseudonyms, and the song became a big hit, especially popular with college singing groups but also popular for all group singing situations. Pratt published sheet music for "Bring Back My Bonnie to Me". History Īlthough the song's origin is uncertain, its original subject could be Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie'): after the defeat of the Prince at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and his subsequent exile, his Jacobite supporters could have sung this song or one like it in his honour and thanks to the ambiguity of the term "Bonnie", which can refer to a woman as well as to a man, they could pretend it was a love song. The best known recording of the song may be a rock n' roll version titled "My Bonnie" by Tony Sheridan and the Beatles, recorded in the first ever commercial recording session that featured the Beatles, and the resulting single is generally regarded as the Beatles' first single. The song has been recorded by numerous artists since the beginning of the 20th century, and many parody versions also exist. It is listed in Roud Folk Song Index as No. " My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean", or simply " My Bonnie", is a traditional Scottish folk song that is popular in Western culture. Problems playing this file? See media help. Still, instead of solely being a “walking through town” song, it is an “I want” song. The opening guitar riff instantly puts me in a good mood, feeling reminiscent of “Belle” in Beauty and the Beast. It is a perfect complement to the scene and is incredibly catchy. In my opinion, the 90s rock song “After Today” is the best opening number ever scored. Despite the push and pull of their relationship, they ultimately come together for the emotional father-son ballad, “Nobody Else But You.” His lyrics highlight his optimism and glass-half-full attitude, while Max’s parts highlight how much he doesn’t want to be with his dad. During a radio control battle between the two, the tape breaks, leaving them with no music, so Goofy improvises a melody inspired by the sounds of the road to cheer up Max. Goofy takes part in and enjoys songs that are more “traditional” Disney, while Max’s musical interest lies in contemporary rock and R&B. How music is used to juxtapose the dynamic between Goofy and Max is incredibly ingenious. The music in A Goofy Movie stands out from other films, mostly because there isn’t a bad song to be heard. Despite the new engine's smaller displacement and slightly lower output ratings, (it has 192 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.3-liter was rated 192 horsepower and 200 lb-ft), its supercharger and intercooler make the most of it, providing a strong, steady stream of power, even at low revs. So imagine our delight in finding a new level of muscle and smoothness with this fresh 189-horsepower kompressor 1.8. Somewhat shy on verve and pearl-like civility was the old 2.3-liter supercharged four in the Mercedes C-Class. The C230 comes in sedan form (along with a related hatchback model), with no plans for an Estate wagon model in the United States. Extra-cost customization options include different rim styles, wing, leather interior, chrome trimmings and what not. While well-equipped, the buggy $2,170 COMAND navigation, $640 Boss sound system and $1,995 hand-free phone-stereo control setup from its big brother models are optional on this entry-level model. A six-speed manual is standard while a five-speed TouchShift automatic is a $1,360 option. Pricing starts at under the $30K mark for what is essentially a well-built, rear-wheel-drive sport-tuned sedan designed mainly for stable high-speed cruising. But all in all, most of the car is built to traditionally high German standards, and most of the owners would not give up the Three Pointed Star for anything else. And Mercedes Benz has actually acknowledged the fact that their computer systems and electronics have bugs in them, which is something that many owners have been complaining about for the past few years. Some of the interior details, like switches and buttons, feel cheap to the touch, while some owners have reported that interior panels have actually come off. While the car is relatively solid in construction, Mercedes Benz standards have markedly become lower since the demise of the models born in the 1980s. The new six-speed manual transmission is now easier to operate, more precise and has a shorter shift travel. This package of measures, known as DIRECT CONTROL, includes newly developed front and rear axle bearings which provide more agile cornering with no noticeable loss of comfort, a more direct steering ratio and reconfigured sports suspension systems. Various technical modifications have been made to the suspension, steering and manual transmission in the entire Mercedes Benz C-Class range, including the C230 Kompressor. The seats are upholstered in a combination of fabric and the new material ARTICO as standard. The centre console and transmission tunnel are clad in aluminum trim. Between the speedometer and rev counter, information appears in a vertical central display. Four clearly arranged dial instruments with white lighting in the style of high-quality chronometers form the centrepiece of the completely redesigned cockpit. This is shown not only by the discreet chrome trim on various controls on the dashboard, but also by newly developed switches, and modified seat design with large side bolsters for the C230 Sport. Mercedes Benz designers have upgraded the interior of the C-Class with great care and attention to detail. The paint shine will supposedly last for decades. An even longer-lasting shine is guaranteed by the newly developed, more scratch-resistant paintwork, which is based on nano-particle technology and reinforces the legendary long-term quality of Mercedes. Large 17-inch wheels and performance tires remain standard on the car officially known as the Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor 1.8 Sport, along with the small-displacement supercharged engine, but the big news is the paintjob. Bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light function, steering-wheel gearshift buttons for the automatic transmission and new audio/navigation systems round off the new package. The innovative, more scratch-resistant paintwork based on nano-technology is likewise standard. The interior of the new C-Class has been upgraded by a new cockpit design with new controls and THERMATIC automatic climate control as standard. The front end has been lightly restyled with a reshaped bumper, redesigned radiator grille and clear headlamps. The suspension, steering and six-speed manual transmission on the C230 Kompressor have a more sporty configuration, ensuring that this entry-level C-Class sports sedan offers a more agile driving experience. Computer problems may crop up from time to time.įour years after its launch, Mercedes-Benz has mildly upgraded the C-Class in terms of technology, equipment and design. The Pontiac Firebird T/A made its first appearance in The Crew 2 where the vehicle was added post-release on Augwith the Flashy 80s alongside with the DeLorean DMC-12 and the Ferrari 512 TR. The vehicle may best be known for its appearances as KITT ( Knight Industries Two Thousand) in the popular 1980s television series Knight Rider. The 1982 Firebird, with its sibling, the Chevy Camaro, introduced GM’s third generation of F Body sports coupes. Under the hood, the Pontiac Firebird T/A comes equipped with a 5.0L Chevrolet cross-fire injection V8 engine capable of developing 165 horsepower at 4,200 revolutions per minute (RPM). The vehicle is one of the first models part of the third generation Pontiac Firebird that was introduced the same year with the T/A being the high performance variant. As the 1980s wore on, the Mustang would become more and more powerful, and would eventually once again be a direct competitor with the Firebird. The 1982 Pontiac Firebird T/A ( T/A short for Trans Am) is an American muscle car manufactured by Pontiac. However, with a production of 130,418, Mustang fell behind Camaro sales, and was not too far out of the Firebird’s reach. This exciting re-issue from MPC brings back the car as a large, 1/16 scale model kit and features authentic detailing inside and out. The Mustang was redesigned in 1979 as more of a sports car, but was still smaller than the traditional pony cars. Pony Car CompetitionĪs they had been since 1974, the Firebird and Camaro were the only true pony cars on the road in 1982. Throughout the production year, 54,962 Trans Ams were manufactured. The 4.9 litre turbo engine that had been used (and largely derided by critics) in the 1980 and 81 models was originally set to be used in the third-generation cars, but Pontiac decided against it in the end. Thanks to suspension improvements, it handled like a dream. Aesthetically, it was a huge improvement, with sleek, aerodynamic lines and the 1980s hottest design feature, pop-up headlights. Trans AmĪs it had been since 1975, the Trans Am remained the best selling Firebird in 1982. 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am In 1982, Pontiac released the third generation Trans Am. The models came standard with the V6 engine, and 21,719 were produced. Firebird S/EĪmong a long list of options, leather seating and 15-inch wheels were made available on the Firebird for the first time in the S/E editions. 41,683 base models were produced throughout the model year. Additionally, the windshield slope was 60 degrees, which was steeper than GM had used on any car to that point. The hatchback design was first introduced to the Firebird in 1982, and even the base model included a rear spoiler, which was part of those improved aerodynamics. Total production was at 116,364, up more than 45,000 cars from the previous year. In that half century, GM's F-car forged an indelible impression on American drivers. Fortunately, power would begin to rise in 1983.Īfter a dismal year in 1981, sales rebounded with the introduction of the new cars. As 2017 nears its close, so does the 50th anniversary of the introduction of Pontiac's Firebird. This represented a drop of 35 horsepower form the most powerful engine in the 1981 cars. There were two versions of the 5.0 V8 engine, a basic one that produced 145 horsepower and a fuel-injected engine that was rated at 165. Most people chose to go with the S/E or the Trans Am, which came with at least the V6 engine, which was a 2.8 litre motor that produced 102 horsepower. The base models came standard with the four-cylinder engine, dubbed the “Iron Duke,” which was rated at only 90 horsepower. The S/E could add any option available for the Firebird, even more than the Trans Am. Pontiac was originally going to drop the Trans Am name to avoid paying royalties to the SCCA for the use of the name – instead going with T/A – but this idea was scrapped before production started. Instead of the four models that had been available for the entire run of second-generation cars, the lineup was simplified to three models: the base, the luxury oriented S/E and the Trans Am. Additionally, a four-cylinder engine was put into the base Firebird for the first time ever. As far as size goes, the car was closer to the original first-generation Firebirds than any later models. After two oil crises and drastically declining sales of the second-generation Firebirds in the early 1980s, the third-generation cars were designed to be lighter and more aerodynamic to save on fuel costs. |
